La Defensa is leading the movement to decarcerate the largest jail population in the United States–the LA County jail system. We’re working to reduce the power and scope of the judiciary, law enforcement, and the legal injustice system. We’re also fighting for a fair & transparent pretrial process, for state & local budgets that reflect community values, and for life-affirming alternatives to incarceration.

SCOPE OF WORK:
The Court Outreach Team Member is a contracted position that supports the Judicial Accountability Team at La Defensa across Los Angeles County to inform the public about our revolutionary, community driven tool known as Rate My Judge. The scope of responsibilities will include, but is not limited to: direct community engagement, driving to courts across Los Angeles County, and joining in-person and/or virtual trainings and debriefs. The individual is expected to work from 15 hours per week for 12 Weeks and reports directly to the Judicial Accountability Coordinator. This position is a temporary position that lasts twelve weeks with the possibility of extension.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Community Outreach: This team will be outreaching to community members on the outside of the courthouse. They will be in charge of:
- Passing out literature
- Helping community members create an account
- Engaging community members on the importance of Rate My Judge
- Strategic Partnerships: This team will be assigned to go into the court and talk to Public Defenders offices, legal aid offices, and other potential partnerships about Rate My Judge.
Team will ensure each office has adequate literature and resources. - Court Watch: This team will be actively court watching the proceedings of identified judges in Los Angeles County. Use Court Watch evaluation forms to collect: anecdotal, bail, and sentencing data. Report back to the proceedings via email.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Other duties as requested by the Judicial Accountability Team.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Strong work history in canvassing and/or organizing with movement groups, non-profit organizations, political candidates, ballot measures or political parties preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, familiarity working with diverse communities preferred. The court outreach team member must be able to find reliable transportation across Los Angeles County, show up prepared and on time on outreach days, and be flexible with scheduling.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Court Outreach Team works closely with the La Defensa staff and collaborates with staff, contractors, vendors, and coalition partners.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must have the physical ability to move boxes weighing 20 or 30 pounds each 10 to 15% of work time. Travel will be required.
Court Outreach Team Member must be available for frequent and regular travel within the county, to participate in field work, organizing, events, and other work as needed. This position requires access to reliable modes of transportation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This is an onsite position that requires travel within Los Angeles County. Work hours will vary and may include night or weekend assignments as required.
RATE OF PAY:
Contractor will be paid on retainer to fulfill the items listed above at $20/HR for a total of $3600 for 300 Hours Worked within the 12 Week Period.
Pay Schedule: Bi-Monthly/Monthly
