Digital Media Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Digital Media Specialist is a mid-level, permanent, full-time, position that primarily handles the creation of social media and other digital media content related to the needs of the organization in collaboration with the Media and Communications team. This individual is also responsible for tech support, and will be asked to provide media support within coalition spaces. This role reports directly to the Digital Media Manager. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Design, Content, and Social Media
    1. Familiarity with collaborative digital media and project management apps such as: Canva or Adobe Suite, MailChimp, Google Business Suite, and project management tracking tools like Trello or Asana
    2. Experience navigating social media platforms, including but not limited to Instagram, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Mastodon, and TikTok
    3. Design graphics for social media, website, and e-blast
    4. Design toolkits for social media platforms, including graphics and copy
    5. Develop captions and copy for graphics, email blasts, and other collateral
    6. Post timely content social media feeds based on the monthly schedule
    7. Edit audio and video clips for posting to social media, such as audio clips from press interviews, webinars, and key County meetings 
    8. Compile and interpret social media and digital ad analytics 
    9. Develop and execute plans to drive social media community engagement up
    10. Identify, establish and maintain Organizational relationships with key individuals such as celebrities or influencers
  2. Videography and Photography
    1. Obtain recordings of webinars to edit and package for La Defensa social media feeds, including uploading to YouTube channel
    2. Film video & take photographs on behalf of the organization at events, actions, press briefings and on zoom calls
    3. Organize, store video and photo content on shared drives
    4. Edit short-form videos E.G. Reels, creating TikToks, YouTube Shorts
  3. Tech Support & Web Development Work
    1. Provide tech support for online communications events such as Facebook Lives, Instagram Lives, and Zoom Webinars
    2. Develop WordPress and SquareSpace front-end user experiences  
  4. Organizational & Organizing Skills
    1. Use organizational tools to stay organized and secure (LastPass, VPN, Trello, Drive, etc.)
    2. Strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment: ability to copy edit text, triage and prioritize sequenced tasks, supporting with media department calendar management and administrative tasks. 
    3. Comfortable doing community outreach, such as text banking, phone banking, and canvassing
    4. Communicate with care and integrity, and in a timely manner
  5. Media Support in Coalition Spaces
    1. Provide media support to coalition spaces such as SNAC, Reimagine LA, Justice LA, and Care First CA Coalition when appropriate.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Other duties as requested by the La Defensa leadership team. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
La Defensa prioritizes hiring applicants who have lived experience and/or identify as impacted by the injustice system as well as survivors of state-sanctioned harm. Previous experience managing social media and digital communications in a political organizing context is required. 

In addition to direct experience managing digital communications, community organizing, public policy, racial, gender and sexuality justice movement experience is also critical. Candidates with evident dedication to abolitionist movement work are preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of local, state, and federal policy that impacts injustice system reforms and abolitionist efforts in Los Angeles County and California preferred. Candidate should have an understanding of the issues within the abolitionist, intersectional feminist, and antiracism movements. 

The candidate must be able to work independently as well as be a team player who supports others collaboratively, be exceedingly well organized, flexible and enjoy the challenges of supporting the media and communication needs of a decentralized team.

Candidates fluent in Spanish are encouraged to apply. 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Digital Media Specialist works closely with La Defensa’s Digital Media Manager, and collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors, coalition partners, local and state legislators, and policy makers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Travel may be required. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Accommodations can be provided upon request. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This is a remote telecommute position that requires travel, especially within Los Angeles County and California. Work hours, depending on circumstances may sometimes be odd and include occasional night or weekend assignments. The La Defensa team meets frequently; monthly for in-person strategy sessions and other organization-related events and activities. 

COMPENSATION:
Starting at $80,000/year. Depending on experience.
